8 Things Every College Dorm Needs

If you are like many other students, moving into your first college dorm will be the first time you have ever lived away from home. It can be scary, exciting, and exhilarating. There is a lot to think about. You’ll want some home comforts, but you’ll also want to look cool and impress all of your new friends. You are also at a time in your life where your tastes are changing, exploring, and discovering your own personality in this fantastic time in your life. You want your dorm to reflect the person you are becoming. These are eight things every student needs in their dorm room.

A Comfortable Bed

With late nights partying, or studying, it’s incredibly important to be comfortable and able to get a great night’s sleep when you do get into bed. Start with your mattress. A bed in a box is the ideal choice when you’ve already got a car full of stuff to move in. Memory foam mattresses are unbelievably comfortable, and will easily last until you graduate. You’ll also want some comfortable pillows and cool bed linens.

Photos

Photos are a lovely way to brighten your room up and remind you of home. Picture frames are cheap and easy ways to change the look of your room and come in all different shapes, sizes, and styles.

Posters

While staying in dorms, you won’t be able to paint your walls. But that doesn’t mean you are stuck with boring beige. Posters can add color and your own style to dorm room walls. Frame them for a touch of class.

A Desk

Students need a desk as well as a desk lamp for studying. If you don’t have much room there are some great small alternatives with clever storage areas available.

Shelving

You are going to have lots of notepads, text books and stationary. As well as a desk, some shelving is essential. Shelves are a great way of adding some storage without taking up too much floor space. If you can, mount some simple shelves above your desk and bed. If this isn’t allowed, look for some under bed storage instead.

Speakers

College isn’t all about studying. It’s also about meeting new people and sharing new experiences. Wireless speakers are brilliant when it comes to having people round to your room. Even with a lack of space, use your speakers to create a relaxed atmosphere or a party vibe.

A Charging Station

Charging stations are a great way of charging all your devices wirelessly. You won’t need wires everywhere to charge your tablet, phone, or iPod. You’ll be able to use your charging station for everything.

Air Fresheners

Dorm rooms aren’t always the most fragrant of spaces. And you never know who you might be sharing with. Air fresheners come in a huge range of different fragrances, as well as different types, from scented candles to fragrance changing wall plugins.

These things will all make your room look, or smell great, creating a great atmosphere while helping you feel settled and relaxed in your new temporary home.
