How to Choose the Best Tool to Find Scholarships

One of the best ways to save time searching for scholarships is to use a variety of tools – online and offline. In fact, I highly recommend that you should add tools to your scholarship search strategy. Diversity truly is the key to finding all scholarship opportunities available to you. I have seen too many students go to one website or app and get frustrated with it for a variety of reasons, but never explore other options. So, I want to encourage you to have a toolbox of scholarship resources.

Before I share the best tools to find scholarships, I am going to discuss the main 3 questions you should ask when looking at one of the most common types of tools – scholarship databases or scholarship search websites.

Is this tool credible? Beware, every tool to help you find scholarships is not credible nor trustworthy. Be sure to investigate the company on social media, look for them in the news, and check with others before making the decision to use the tool. One huge sign that the website is not credible is if it asks for you to pay to get search results. Avoid these type of websites!

Are you able to put in your information to filter results? With millions of students around the world searching for scholarships, you can’t search like the rest of the crowd. Great scholarship websites have an effective filtering system that allows you to find scholarship opportunities that are best fit for you. Yes, you will need to do further research to make sure that you are indeed a great fit for the scholarship, but you should only do that from filtered search results.

Are the search results updated? Can you imagine the frustration of looking up scholarships, making a list of specific scholarship opportunities, and starting the scholarship application process only to find out that the scholarship is no longer available or the deadline has passed? Beyond frustrating, right?! Great scholarship search websites maintain accurate information to save you the frustration of pursuing a scholarship that has expired or is no longer available. Make sure that your tools pass the test of 3 questions I just discussed with you.

So, here’s my list of the best tools to search for scholarships (hint, hint, you need to have these 3 tools minimum in your toolbox!):

Sallie Mae’s Scholarship Search Database

Scholly App
