How to get recruited to a scholarship

Every high school athlete dreams that all of their hard work will pay off and that they be able to play at college level. To make this dream a reality it’s important that students and parents find out everything there is to know and the scholarship recruiting process.

Scholarships aren’t guaranteed but there is a way to try and take control of this process so that there’s more chance of making your child’s dream come true. Athletes USA can help you get a scholarship.

Enroll in the correct class

The classes that an athlete takes when they start their freshman year in high school can affect eligibility for the NCAA. These standards are always changing and students need to ensure that the classes they are taking follow the NCAA requirements. The easiest way to do this is to speak to the school guidance counsellor who can make sure that the courses your child is taking will match the NCAA core courses.

Register at the NCAA

All students have to register with the NCAA Eligibility Centre and every high school student has to register so that they will be recognised as an amateur athlete. Do this early as otherwise it can be very easy to miss out. Without registering there’s no chance of a
scholarship.

List all of the schools that are of interest

Make some simple lists that contain the schools that you want to play for. The first list contains the dream schools, the second contains the ones that are more likely to accept you and the third one is a back up list of schools in case you don’t get into your first or second list
choices.

Get a video made

This is known as a recruiting video and needs to attract the attention of university coaches. A good structure including highlights of your best plays as well as a large section of normal game play will show the coaches your complete set of skills.

Find out more about the schools

Every school has a website that you can view to find out everything you need to know. There are also unofficial sites that allow you to find out from students who have attended these schools exactly what they’re like. The most important piece of information to find are the contact details for the coaches.

Talk to students at the college

It’s possible to get the school to give you names of students that you can talk to, or you can find them on social media such as Twitter and Facebook. By asking them for tips you can get a sneak peak into what goes on at the college, giving you a better idea if it will suit your requirements.

Get into a sports camp at your chosen University

If you can get into and attend a sports camp you can get in front of the coaches and people who could potentially recruit you, getting you that little bit closer to receiving a scholarship.
